The heart of VMS is this belief:
Healing doesn’t happen in isolation, it happens in relationships.
VMS Family Counseling Services was created to serve children, families, and systems impacted by relational trauma, attachment disruptions, and chronic stress, especially those who have been asked to survive more than they should have. Many of the families who come to VMS have tried “traditional” therapy and been left feeling blamed, overwhelmed, or misunderstood. VMS exists to change that experience.

At VMS, behavior is never viewed as the problem, it is viewed as communication. Aggression, defiance, shutdown, and emotional volatility are understood as adaptive responses to unmet needs, disrupted attachment, and nervous systems stuck in survival. Treatment focuses on restoring felt safety, strengthening relationships, and supporting regulation before expecting insight or change.
VMS is intentionally built as a trauma-informed, attachment-focused group practice. Clinicians are carefully trained and supervised to work systemically—with children, caregivers, schools, and community partners—rather than treating symptoms in isolation. The practice values play, connection, and creativity as powerful tools for healing, especially for children who do not yet have words for their experiences.

Beyond direct clinical care, VMS serves as a hub for education and collaboration—supporting foster and adoptive families, partnering with agencies, and contributing to broader systems of care. The work is grounded in science, delivered with compassion, and guided by a deep respect for the resilience of the families served.
VMS stands for:
• Healing through relationship
• Seeing the whole child and whole family
• Translating trauma science into practical, humane care
• Building safety before expecting change
